Boehner not on board with stimulus

House Minority Leader Rep. John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) riterated his opposition on Sunday to the $825 billion economic stimulus package in its current form, adding he expects most Republicans to oppose it as well it.

"If it's the plan I see today, put me down in the no column," Boehner said on NBC's "Meet the Press"

Boehner said he called out House Democrats for inserting money for "slow-moving" investments into the stimulus, including $200 million to fix the National Mall and $200 million for contraceptives.

"How will this fix an ailing economy?" Boehner asked. "What we see with their plan is a lot of spending that we just don't think will work.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) defended pieces of the spending, including money for contraceptives, earlier on ABC's "This Week", saying she would make "no apologies" for finding ways to lower state and local costs.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) echoed Boehner's sentiments on CNN's "State of the Union", calling the House plan "a nonstarter" because it would spend only 13 percent of the money in the first year. Graham also indicated that Republican ideas were not being fully heard by Democrats.

"The people spending the money are not going to be the ones paying it back. It's going to be your kids and your grandkids," Graham said. "I'd like to get together in a room, Republicans and Democrats, and figure this out."

Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), however, indicated on "Fox News Sunday" that Republicans are getting plenty of air time.

"The president-elect and many of us are trying to work very closely with Republicans," he said, "and I think we're going to have a very good package.""
