A couple of quick points on Bolton and his book. If Trump truly is as bad as Bolton says, why did he stay? More importantly, when given the opportunity to "make it right" during the impeachment farce, he didn't. The Democrats wanted him to testify, but in order to he would have had to do it under oath, he did not. He waited to make a fortune on his book.
Perhaps the most important point is the actual accusations. I have no doubt that Trump is a jerk and said some stupid stuff. It would also not surprise me if some people worked to undermine him for legitimate reasons, that there was chaos in the White House, yada, yada, yada. But on the two somewhat major accusations concerning China don't seem plausible. The less serious one of Trump asking Xi to buy agriculture products to help him win reelection sounds like something Trump might say but is being twisted beyond the context of the discussion. However the fact that one of the most respected men Washington, The US Trade Representative, Robert Lighthizer was there and says it absolutely did not happen, leads me to believe that Bolton is either totally making it up or seriously exaggerating the entire conversation. The second and more troubling accusation that Xi told Trump that he was building concentration camps and Trump said he was OK with it is just bizarre. It is bizarre not only to believe that Trump would casually agree to something like that but more that Xi would even bring it up in the first place. Why, under what circumstances would Xi make such an admission? It is plain silly to think he would.
In the end it will be like everything else in this polarized country, people will believe what they want and still vote the way they were gong to. I would only add this, Bolton doing what he is doing, combined with the generals and Defense Secretary doing what they did, leads me to believe that defense conservatives realize that ultimately they cannot stop Trump from doing what he wants to do, reign in our interventionist foreign policy and their knives are out.
